The easiest secure way to pay any tax amounts you owe is to set up a direct debit from your bank account when your return is filed.

Mailing a paper check with a payment coupon isn’t hard, but checks may be stolen from the mail and washed, or the government occasionally misapplies a payment to the wrong account. Paying online is an option but usually involves creating an account or otherwise validating your identity.

Be cautious about using online payment sites that you find from Google search: scam sites exist, and even legitimate sites that will process a credit card tax payment may incur hefty fees and potentially expose your personal data to hacking.

PAYING THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE

The IRS will accept electronic payments from your bank account at no charge. You can also pay with a credit or debit card for an additional processing fee.

The best option for individuals is probably your IRS account. Click to visit IRS.gov for more information and to sign up.

Alternatives: Individuals can also make IRS payments without creating an account though IRS DirectPay. Individuals and businesses can use the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), which takes longer to set up but provides additional options (and is the only online option for business payments).

Some tips for using DirectPay:

  • On the first screen, choose the reason for the payment and the tax year to which the payment applies.

  • On the second screen, you need to select a year where you have previously filed a return to verify your mailing address. Do not select the current year as it will not be processed yet.

  • If you get an error on the second screen, you will need to retype the Social Security number.
